The first book of the project "Shield and Sword of the Fatherland" chronologically traces all the changes in uniforms, insignia and equipment of personnel of state security agencies, border and internal security of the People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs of the USSR in the period from July 1934 to 1937. At the same time, undoubtedly, research into the uniform and symbols of the People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs is impossible without knowledge of the history of the department. Therefore, the book pays special attention to the organizational structure, as well as to the people who held prominent positions in the NKVD during the period under review.
The book is entirely based on archival documents that allow us to trace the development of the uniform from the formation of the NKVD of the USSR and the introduction of a fundamentally new unique form of clothing until the transition to army-style uniforms. Most of the archival materials have not previously been used in the public press.
The book contains more than 800 color illustrations, including 280 photographic documents of the era, as well as more than 130 photographs of original uniforms and equipment from museum and private collections, many of which are also published for the first time. The photographs are complemented by the author's illustrations and historical reconstructions. The publication is equipped with a scientific reference apparatus, contains personal commentary and indexes.
