Big Jon Electronics The Green Russian. Alrighty, here it is - the definitive Big Muff Pi, the Green "Tall Font" (V7C, same as the V7B "Civil War" circuit) Russian - the pinnacle of Soviettechnology - at an impressively low price point - handmade by Big Jon Electronics in sunny Somerville, MA. For this one, we tried to remain as true-to-the-original as possible - down to using hand-matched, NOS USSR-manufactured KT3102EM transistors and KD522B diodes throughout. Don't let other people feed you that "oh but the 2N5087/2N5088/2N5089 is the modern equivalent " line; there's no substitute for the real thing. Other component values for resistors/capacitors etc. Were pulled right off the original schematic. We have changed some quality-of-life things: the power section now accommodates a normal Boss-style adapter instead of the 3.5mm one. Knob tapers have been adjusted to be more usable (the originals sometimes had vary wacky tapers). Finally, we've crammed all of this into a 1590B enclosure, which massively reduces pedalboard footprint compared to the huge original tank of a box these came in.

Sound-wise, it's a Muff, and it's solidly in Muff sonic territory. However, the Green Russian gets more overdrive-y than some of the others (some of these were actually marketed as the Red Army Overdrive back in the day)... The breakup is smoother and less wild than on some of the other Muffs. The voicing is a bit darker than some of the others, too, which has made it the Muff-of-choice for bassists everywhere. I've been in love with this circuit ever since I picked up one for use with my bass rig over a decade ago - and if you plug one in, you'll see why!

The innards are the usual Big Jon Electronics point-to-point handwired goodness, with true-bypass switching and beefy components. Power is by 9v Boss-style Power Supply only - a battery strap can be added for a few extra dollars, if you don't want to rely on an adapter.
