Officer's visor with green peak and black band, both piped in raspberry, distinctive of NKVD Border Troops uniforms. Fibre visor, plastic chinstrap is held by metal buttons. Black liner is hand marked with 58 for size. Condition: Very good original condition -- showing very some wear, especially on the liner, some cracks and discoloration of the cockade, but NO moth damage.

The NKVD or People's Commisariat for Internal Affairs was a government department which handled a number of the Soviet Union's affairs of state. The NKVD is best known for the Main Directorate for State Security (GUGB), which succeeded the OGPU and the Cheka as the secret police agency of the Soviet Union. The GUGB was instrumental in Stalin's ethnic cleansing and genocides, and was responsible for massacres of civilians and other war crimes.

Many consider the NKVD to be a criminal organization, mostly for the activities of GUGB officers and investigators, as well as supporting NKVD troops and GULAG guards. In addition to its state security and police functions, however, some of its departments handled other matters, such as transport, fire guards, border guard (NKVD Border Troops), etc. The tasks that were traditionally assigned to the Ministry of the Interior (MVD). The mission of the NKVD Border Troops included repulsing armed incursions into Soviet territory; preventing illegal crossings of the border or the transport of weapons, explosives, contraband, or subversive literature across the border; monitoring the observance of established procedures at border crossing points. NKVD Border Troops units on the western USSR frontier saw particularly fierce combat in the first weeks of the German invasion of the USSR (JuneJuly 1941).

They bore the brunt of the initial German assault, and due to this, suffered high casualty rates. Border troops from other parts of the Soviet border were also involved in the fighting of the war.

Notably, the 105th, 157th, and 333rd Border Troops regiments took part in the Battle for Berlin in 1945. During and after the war, 150 border guards were awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union and over 13,000 of them were decorated with different orders and medals.
