Soviet Russian Medal Order Red Star Patriotic War Group FOR THE MOTHERLAND

  
Soviet Russian USSR medal group consisting of an Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class, scarcer "fisheye" variation, with serial number in the 600-650 thousand range, and an Order of the Red Star 1944 issue with serial number in the 800-850 thousand range, both awarded to Lieutenant Vasily Sheikov, sub-machine gun platoon commander! Sheiko earned his Order of the Red Star fighting against mixed Romanian and German forces during the Second Jassy-Kishinev Offensive (a massive German defeat). Despite being wounded (shoulder and cheek), he led his platoon to capture a heavily fortified enemy strongpoint, urging his men onward with the cry. In total, he and his platoon destroyed 3 enemy pillboxes, throwing grenades into their embrasures. Sheiko personally killed 4 Romanian soldiers and took 5 prisoner. As Romania switched sides in the course of the offensive, this fighting would count among the last Soviet vs. Romanian actions of the war. Sheiko earned his Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class in January 1945, fighting near Lucenec, Slovakia. Leading a group of soldiers, he flanked an enemy machine gun, killed its crew, and used the captured gun to cover the rest of the infantry's advance. When the Germans attempted flanking moves, he led his platoon to repel them back to their starting positions. He captured 2 Germans in the process. Sheiko's actions contributed materially to the regiment accomplishing its mission. Condition is as seen in the images. Except for broken enamel on the 3 o'clock arms of both awards, almost as though they both took a hit simultaneously.

There is also a small ding in the reverse of the 12 o'clock arm of the Red Star, mentioned here only because of its distance from the scanner glass in the images. The serial numbers of the awards are authentic and match the serial numbers shown in the archival documents.
