USSR State Emblem from an International Boundary Marker, 1980s. Late version in bronze-toned plastic as opposed to the earlier issues in solid bronze with nickel plating. The emblem measures 22 cm in height, 20 cm in width approx.
Although clearly inferior to the earlier issues in quality, it is still nicely detailed. The Soviet state seal is in high 3-d profile. The Marxist slogan Proletarians of All Countries, Unite! Is carefully spelled-out in languages of all Soviet republics comprising the Soviet Union at the time. A cost-saving expediency indicative of the dire state of the Soviet economy in the 80s, the plastic version was reportedly installed on the boundary posts that were out of sight in the wilderness or at least on the less travelled checkpoints. At the same time, the border markers at busy or highly visible locations still had the "old-fashion" high-quality emblems through the end of the Soviet Union. The plaque is in excellent, near mint condition, apparently never used. There are no signs of weathering to the finish or wear around the screw holes. An very interesting and uncommon Cold War collectible from the tail end of the Cold War, it can be a nice, easy to display decorative highlight for the Soviet collection, and a great conversation piece.
